|Multicultural Literatures| is a new direction in literary studies. It differs from traditional Comparative Literature studies in that it emphasizes a comparative examination of different cultures through literature without necessarily considering differences in language. This dissertation is a compendium of interrelated extended essays about the outsider in multicultural contexts (emphasizing social class and hierarchy in relation to ostracism) in selected literary works. It consists of an introductory essay, a review of the literature, four major extended essays, a concluding essay, and a bibliography listing works cited and consulted. the |Introduction| defines |Multicultural Literatures| and explains this work's focus on the outsider in Forster, Carver, Singer and Sumii. the |Review of the Literature| gives an overview of fictional and critical work related to the outsider theme and a brief discussion of the relationship of Muriel Spark, F. Scott Fitzgerald and V.S. Naipaul to the four major essays. |Class, Race and Sexual Orientation and the Outsider in Three Novels by E.M. Forster| examines his view of the outsider and discrimination with regard to working class and middle class cultures (Howards End), British colonial and Indian cultures (A Passage to India), and the cultures of sexual orientation (Maurice). |Afflictions, Misfortunes and Disabilities: the Outsider in Several Representative Short Stories by Raymond Carver| considers the outsider in terms of dysfunction and disability in relation to white American working class culture in |Where I'm Calling From,| |One More Thing,| |Preservation,| |Cathedral,| |The Third Thing That Killed My Father Off,| and |Fever.| |Fools, Sinners and Scholars: the Outsider in Several Representative Short Stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer| looks at aspects of the outsider in East European Jewish culture in |Gimpel the Fool,| |The Man Who Came Back,| |I Place My Reliance On No Man,| |Caricature,| |The Spinoza of Market Street,| and |Yentl the Yeshiva Boy.| |Sumii Sue, the Outsider and Discrimination in Japan| examines Sumii's views on sexism, anti-Burakumin discrimination and classism in Japanese culture in Headwind, the River with No Bridge, and Daybreak and Morning Glow. the Conclusion ties the outsider themes in these four authors together.
