This thesis will offer a diagnosis of the outsider art market, drawing heavily upon primary research gathered from the field's commercial participants. In order to effectively render this diagnosis, it will analyze the current state of the market as well as its primary characteristics. It will also consider the genesis of outsider art within an art historical context and compare it with today's post-modern art environment. The results of this analysis will demonstrate the potential of the outsider art market and offer a recommendation as to how one might increase the field's market activity. Finally, the thesis will prove that the outsider art field, having outlived its usefulness as an independent category, should be realigned with its closest genealogical relatives in order to correct a number of characteristics that have hindered the field's growth and kept it from realizing its market potential.
