The Outsider and the Destabilisation of the Domestic Sphere in the Works of Sheridan Le Fanu

|This thesis will discuss instances of the phenomenon of the outsider in the works of Sheridan Le Fanu. It will focus primarily on this figure and its role in the destabilisation of the domestic sphere on the backgound of a broader social context. A recurring motif found within late Gothic and sensation fiction, particularly during the Victorian era, is the infiltration of an outsider, usually of a villainous nature, into the familial unit. This figure takes on many forms including vampire, governess, distant relation or even foreigner. This causes a disruption within the unit, and in turn raises issues to do with desire and the Victorian obsession with restraint and traditional formalised domestic roles. This thesis will argue that by identifying these characters as figures representing progress, change and danger, it is possible to observe the unacknowledged anxieties of a society (primarily British) in a period of marked transition, as well as reassess the importance and impact of Le Fanu's writing. The outsider figure is ubiquitous in Le Fanu's work, and a detailed study of his novels and short stories in relation to their importance in elucidating tensions and anxieties of Victorian England reveals a heretofore neglected element of Sheridan Le Fanu's fiction.|--Abstract, leaf 2.
